We are all familiar with the Parable of the Lost Son. This parable is also known as the Parable of the PRODIGAL SON. The word prodigal means wastefully extravagant or reckless usage of resources. And no wonder it is named as such because of how the LOST son squandered the father’s generosity.
Of all the parables of Jesus, this one is so full of emotion. And in one way or another, we could identify ourselves with the characters. At some time in our lives, we could be the prodigal son who rebelled against the father or we could also be the elder son who was obedient but had pride in his heart. Both sons were lost, both never saw the beauty of being with the father. Yet both received a response from Him. And His response was that of extravagant love and overflowing grace.
The heart of the father in this parable is a reflection of the very heart of our God. The heart of God that awaits the return of His son that squandered His generosity. The heart of God that came out to lovingly entreat the other son to rejoice with Him. His heart that made Him recklessly run, embrace and kiss the son who was lost but now found. His heart that lavishly celebrated the son who was once dead but is now alive. Church, this is the heart of God. This is heart of our Prodigal Father. His heart that is extravagant in loving His own. His heart that is generous in giving compassion to His children. His heart that is lavish in grace to the undeserving. His heart that recklessly gave up His only Son that we may be with Him.
If you are doubting the love of God for us or if you feel condemned or ashamed of your sins. Do not be. 1 John 3:1 assures us of this wonderful promise, “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!…”
Yes, we are prodigal sons or daughters but we rejoice because we have a Prodigal Father!
