How to Hear From God – Silence your Mind

The greatest benefit of salvation is to distinguish and hear when God personally speaks to us. There can be no intimate relationship with our Heavenly Father without this ability. But as easy as it is for us to speak to Him, the average Christian has a hard time hearing His voice. This is not the way the Lord intended it to be.

Why it’s Important to Hear from God:

Learning to clearly distinguish Gods voice is invaluable. Instead of going through life blindly, we can have the wisdom God guide and protect us. We can all have our lives radically transformed by hearing the voice of the lord better.

The worst marital problem is one word from the lord away from total turnaround. If you are suffering from any sickness or disease, one living word from the lord will instantly heal you. If you are in financial crisis, the lord knows how to turn your situation around. It’s just a matter of hearing His voice.

God Constantly Speaks to Us:

The Lord constantly speaks to us and gives us His directions. It’s never the Lord who is not speaking, but it’s us who are not hearing. Our mind tend to get too loud and crowded that we miss out on His voice. Jesus made some radical statement about hearing His voice –

“To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. And when he brings out his sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. Yet they will by no means follow a stranger, but will flee from him, for they do no know the voice of strangers.” {John 10:3-5}

How can you Hear God’s Voice?

Notice that Jesus clearly said that His sheep hear His voice. This means that all those who believe in Jesus Christ can and do hear the voice of God; they just don’t recognize what they are hearing as God’s voice. If you think of our entertainment centers – they stream twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. When you want to watch the news or listen to some radio station, you normally turn the receiver on and tune in.

Failure to hear the signal doesn’t meant that the station isn’t transmitting. Sometimes the problem is with the receiver. In the same way, our Heavenly father is constantly transmitting His voice to His children, but few are turned on and tuned in. If we are not properly tuned in and, we miss out on the directions God is giving us.

Be Still:

The first thing we need to do is to fix our receivers – believe that God is already speaking, silence everything on our mind and start listening. However, that takes time, effort and focus. In this fast past society, our lives are so busy that it isn’t conductive to hearing God’s voice. Often when we get down on our knees to pray, we are very careful not to exceed the time on prayers because there’s always something waiting to be done.

The thing is, God doesn’t speak while we’re speaking. What does this mean? you must be still after you’ve submitted all your requests to God, give Him a chance to speak to you. “Be still, and know that I am God.” For this reason, it is stillness that we tune our Spiritual ears in order to hear the voice of God.

God is Spirit:

The Lord always speaks to us in that still, small voice. “God is a Spirit and they that worship Him must worship Him in Spirit and truth.” That means that communication with God is Spirit to spirit, not brain to brain or mouth to ear like we communicate in the physical realm. The Lord speaks to our spirits, not in words, but in thoughts and impressions.

The our spirits speaks to us in words, eg “I think the Lord wants me to do this and that”. The Lord doesn’t typically say “you do this and that”. But He will impress your spirit to do something, and then your spirit says, “I’m being instructed to do this…” Therefore we often miss the leading of the Lord thinking it’s our own thoughts.

How many times have you done something stupid and afterwards said “I knew that was the wrong thing to do”. You didn’t feel right about your decision, but you followed logic or pressure only to find out that your impression was actually the Lord speaking to you. “Delight thyself also in the Lord; and He shall give thee the desires of thine heart“. { Psalms 37:4}

This verse means that when you are seeking the Lord, He will put His wants or desires into your heart. He will make His desires become your desires. The Lord changes your “want to”. May our good Lord order your steps and draw you closer to His righteousness.
