Isaiah 6:1-9 (not yet)
Uzziah was probably Judah’s greatest king — He reigned for 42 years.
During most of his reign He obeyed God and Judah experienced great prosperity.
But one day King Uzziah overstepped his bounds and committed the sin of presumption.
He was a king and not a priest, but he tried to make sacrifices upon God’s Holy Altar — he profaned the holiness of the Temple.
God was angry and struck Uzziah with leprosy.
The King had to withdraw from the Throne and go into seclusion.
He died from leprosy.
This was an extremely hard time for Judah…………A time of crisis and transition.
Uzziah’s death came as disillusionment to the young prophet, Isaiah.
His hopes for the nation and his career were shattered. This was a crisis in his ministry.
Isaiah had lived through the last 20 years of Uzziah’s reign.
There was an appearance of outward material prosperity, but there was much inward corruption.
Isaiah didn’t know what lay ahead for his people.
He didn’t know what this might do to his career.
He felt impending judgment was about to fall from God.
As he was praying in the Temple about how all his earthly hopes had been destroyed, he had a vision of God and the unseen spiritual world.
He found that even though his king was dead, his God was still in control.
ISAIAH 6:1-9 — In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!” Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. And he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.” And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here I am! Send me.” And he said, “Go, and say to this people: “ ‘Keep on hearing, but do not understand; keep on seeing, but do not perceive.’
I believe Isaiah experienced a revival in his own life that day.
We’d do well to experience such a revival today.
We’re living at a very crucial point in our history.
We’ll either have a revival or we’ll have a funeral for the Church.
We have been longing and praying to see a genuine Heaven-sent, Holy Ghost Revival. It seems God is answering that prayer at Asbury University right now.
PRAISE GOD!
To have revival, we must prepare our hearts to accept what God has for us……
Isaiah was ready.
1. WOE (Isaiah 6:5) — And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!”
Isaiah had felt comfortable until this point.
He was doing a fairly good job of prophesying.
He was living better than the average prophet of his day.
He was like a lot of us.
We compare ourselves to those who make us look better……….
Stevenson orchestra — I looked slim……….
We never compare ourselves to someone who makes us look bad.
Suddenly, Isaiah saw God in all of HIS HOLINESS and realized how badly he was missing the mark. He saw his own sinful condition!
Suddenly his own righteousness didn’t seem all that impressive.
Isaiah 64:6 — We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment. We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
We must come to that place in our lives too.
We need to quit making excuses and rationalizing away what God wants to do in our lives.
When we compare ourselves to the world, we look pretty good, but have we let God show us what we should be — what He wants us to be?
I’m concerned about how often Christians proclaim they’re living holy lives, but have incorporated into their lives language and habits they’d have never thought of 20 years ago………
People say, “Times have changed!”
Is this true or is it just that bad now looks good because worse has shown up?
Don’t compare your life to the standards of the world!
The world is becoming ever increasingly sinful.
Compare your life to God and see how you match up to His Holiness. Stop making excuses and let God do His work.
It’s time God’s Church gets back to preaching and living Holiness.
We need a genuine, Heaven-sent, God-breathed revival.
If the Methodists would’ve been faithful to their message there’d never have been a need for a Wesleyan Church, etc.
Unless we get back to God, we’ll lose our charter too. He will raise up another body of people to praise and glorify His Name.
Where are you in God’s expectation? Prayer? Bible? Tithe? Witness?
Isaiah found he was undone!
2. LO — Isaiah 6:7 — And he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.”
To Isaiah the situation seemed hopeless. How could he ever find help for his sinful condition?
He found God could care for it as soon as he quit trying to excuse it or explain it away or ignore the sin in his life. He needed to surrender his will to God’s Will.
As soon as he confessed it, God cleansed it.
1 John 1:9 — If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
A Seraphim came and purged Isaiah’s lips (and heart). Cleansed him at the point of his greatest need.
God made him a vessel fit for His service. Note: God doesn’t use polluted vessels.
What Isaiah experienced wasn’t done through some man-made device. This was total cleansing by God……..
3. GO — Isaiah 6:9–And he said, “Go, and say to this people: “‘Keep on hearing, but do not understand; keep on seeing, but do not perceive.’”
God commissioned Isaiah to do a great work.
God sent him only after he’d been made ready by God………Only after he’d spent time with God and his heart burned with Divine Compassion.
This wasn’t something Isaiah had to work up in himself.
He volunteered for service because he wanted to glorify God.
REVIVAL HAD COME TO ISAIAH’S SPIRIT AND OH, WHAT A DIFFERENCE IT MADE!
True revival will make a difference in our lives and actions too! Both as a Church and as individuals.
We so desperately need revival!
We want revival and all the blessings it will bring! — Why does it tarry?
4. BECAUSE IT IS SO HIGHLY COMMERCIALIZED.
Somewhere we’ve gotten the idea that man brings revival.
There are a few “big guns” running around the country demanding high salaries and we feel we can’t have revival unless we can get one of them to come.
Or the “Electric Church” elite……….
Don’t misunderstand, I wouldn’t mind having a big name if God directs, but a man can’t bring revival — GOD BRINGS REVIVAL!
God works as we prepare our hearts for Him to move on us.
We could get Billy Graham (now Franklin) in here and not have revival if we’re not ready.
We had a wonderful revival with an evangelist in Pullman then I had him come to Cheyenne hoping for a repeat of what we had in Pullman. By this time the man had decided he was able to preach revival. He was more worried about what he would be paid, how much his schedule would demand, etc. That revival was a dud!
We’ll have revival as we break up the fallow ground of our hearts………..
5. BECAUSE OF THE CHEAPENING OF THE GOSPEL.
Dark sanctuaries, Hymns to Rock Beat……Familiarization with God……Movie Star testimonies (“Come out — be separate”).
2 Corinthians 6:17 — Therefore go out from their midst, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch no unclean thing; then I will welcome you,
Stripper for Jesus (Amy Grant compromise…..)
I believe instead of trying to bring the Gospel down to where the world is comfortable, we should be inviting the world to have a higher standard and be living there ourselves.
Remember Uzziah and his sin of presumption…………..
6. BECAUSE OF CARELESSNESS
Too often we rush people away from the altar before they’re prayed through……..
Talk them into an experience they don’t really have.
Make excuses why they’ve fallen short — tell them God understands. Youth worker in Cheyenne.
Too many people who think they have a testimony today are “head-Christians,” but not “heart-Christians.”……………….
God help us to take more care at this point. — vaccinated Christians……….
No wonder we don’t see revival — too many are still dead in trespasses and sins.
The altar is a dying place……….Let a person come to the place where they die out to self and come alive unto God.
7. BECAUSE OF FEAR.
We’re too tight-lipped about sin — about the claims of Christ and the false religions of our day.
Sometimes we let people believe we think there might be more than one Name whereby men might be saved.
Acts 4:12 — And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
We’re afraid to stand for what we claim we believe. We might make somebody mad or hurt somebody’s feelings.
Isaiah wasn’t afraid to speak God’s Word even though it meant his life……sawed in half…….
Elijah wasn’t afraid to take a stand against God’s enemies…………….
Peter and Paul spoke boldly for their convictions.
It’s time Christians speak out in the Name of Jesus Christ.
It’s time we take a stand against sin and false religions rather than try to co-exist so we won’t make waves.
If we’re going to see revival we’re going to have to stand up for Jesus!
John Wesley saw the doors of the English churches close against him………
Wesley feared neither men nor devils — preached from his Father’s Grave.
Whitfield was belittled and made fun of in his day.
Spurgeon faced mockery and ridicule.
In the N.T. Christians were stoned, beaten, and suffered every kind of cruel punishment.
How is it then, since sin and sinners haven’t changed, that preachers, Churches, and Christians no longer raise the wrath of Hell?
Why do we seem so boring?
Why isn’t Satan afraid of us any longer?
We can have riots without revival — but in the light of the Bible and Church History, where can we have revival without riots?
IT’S TIME WE GRAB HOLD OF THE DEVIL’S TAIL AND DO A LITTLE TWISTING!
Rebuke Satan, in the Name of Jesus, for what he’s doing…………..
When revival hits the Gates of Hell will not prevail against God’s Church.
8. BECAUSE OF OUR LACK OF URGENCY IN PRAYER.
We talk about prayer, but we do so little praying.
The District Superintendent of the Rocky Mountain District calling for a day of prayer and fasting.
Prayer moves the Hand of God.
Prayer will align our lives with God’s Will.
Prayer brings the power we need to see miracles happen — Elijah prayed!
James 5:16-18 — Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit.
We’ve not learned to wrestle with God in prayer.
Most of us haven’t even worked up a sweat on our souls in prayer.
THE ONLY POWER THAT GOD YIELDS TO IS THE POWER OF PRAYER.
We write about prayer, but don’t do it. We flaunt our gifts, natural or spiritual.
We air our views. We correct each other’s Doctrine.
BUT WHO IS STORMING HELL’S STRONGHOLD WITH PRAYER?
Who is saying to the Devil, “That’s as far as you’re going!”
Who denies themselves food or good company or good rest so Hell will be less populated and demons less productive and souls saved for God’s Kingdom?
WHO?
God help us to wake up to what we must do before it gets any later.
9. BECAUSE WE STEAL THE GLORY THAT BELONGS TO GOD.
John 5:41 — I do not receive glory from people.
John 5:44 — How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God
Away with all this taking credit for God’s working. “I prayed.” “My Church reaches more people than your Church is reaching.” “I’m the best soul-winner!” “Finest speaker.”
REVIVAL COMES FROM GOD!
– Not one of us is worthy by our own merit to be used of God.
Only as He transforms our lives like He did Isaiah’s will we see revival.
1. WOE
2. LO
3. GO
Is God trying to teach you something today?
There is an awakening happening today! Ask God to make you a part of it for His Glory!R
